Im trying to put back the stock monsoon stereo in the '98 SS I just bought, and I was wondering how many wires are coming out of the female plug that connects to the amp in the wheel well. Any help would be great.

The answer to that is A LOT! but if you want the exact number i could get that for you.... heres a question for you, is the stock harness still there? Are the stock speaker harnesses still there? Im going to tell you now, if everything has been taken out, its gonna be a hell of a job puting the stock stuff back in

As far as I know everything is at it was stock except he cut the main plug that connects to the stock headunit and the plug that connects to the amp in the rear. I got the plug with wires out of another camaro in the junk yard, but couldnt get same for the amp. GM sells the plug itself but without wires which means I would need a diagram to re-connect them in or just get another plug like I have and just connect the matching wires, saving a lot of time. I was just wondering about the number of wires to see whether it was easy enough to use a new plug and to make sure all the needed wires are still there.

If that plug is off the main wiring harness, I might be able to get it for you. We’re working on an LS1 – Jag hybrid and I know the antenna is on the main harness. I know for sure we have a stock headunit Amp for a 2001 that won’t be used, if you need one that I’m sure the customer will let go cheap. I’ll check next time I go down to the garage. I should be down there this weekend, so I’ll look then contact you on the plug.

Well its not the amp on the head unit or the wiring for it that I need. What I need is the plug that is connected to the main Monsoon amp that is next to the spare tire. I'd love to have the plug along with a foot of the wire still connected to it(or as much as possible).

Talked with the customer and he said you can have the connector with the pigtail for $30. Also said if you wanted the Monsoon Amp (one that mounts in the rear wheel well as pictured) he’ll let you have it and the connector/pigtail for $100 total for all. You will also need to pay for shipping. These came from a 2001 T/A. You can see from the pic that there is a foot or more of pigtail that can be cut from the harness and includes the subwoofer connector (small connector w/ orange wiring). If you want the stuff, call Matt Diamond at Gearhead Garage (480) 497-8811 and he can arrange shipping for you. He will take care of the billing for the part/s and shipping for you, so you can put it on CC or Paypal with his shop.

Awesome, I appriciate your time and I will most likely contact him. Do you know if he's set on that price? only reason I ask is that I bought the plug and wires for the headunit for $4.50. Plus whats the story with the subwoofer wire. My car doesnt have one factory, and I didnt think it was ever an option. Is this something that was added by an Al&Eds type store, and would it work on a Monsoon system with out a subwoofer? If you dont know off hand dont worry about it, I can contact Matt Diamond about it. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to take pictures and communicating with Matt Diamond on the matter./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Monsoons all had subwoofers mounted in the rear well. Yes, it will work with or without it. If you have an AMP, make sure it is like the one shown in the pic. That is a Monsoon AMP. The non-Monsoon cars have this plug, they just don’t have the AMP to drive 9 speakers, let alone all 9 speakers (subwoofer as 1 of those). You can add any subwoofer to that plug also, unless you were set on factory.

Just wondering, but are you sure that all monsoons had a sub mounted in the rear, because i had a monsoon system and it never came with a rear mounted sub... i know the bose sound system did
The Monsoon stereo is manufactured by Delphi, a division of Delco Electronics. The main difference between the Bose vs Monsoon, is the fact that the Monsoon has a separate AMP to drive ‘some’ of the speakers – subwoofer being one. I believe the front and door speakers are driven by the head unit. This gives them the 500 watt rating, being less power is drawn from the head unit and re-supplied via a separate Amp. The Bose system, all the speakers are all driven by the head unit. As far as I know, Monsoons all got a subwoofer in the wheel-well that I have torn apart.

Maybe the sub was an addition in later years or maybe an option... i know that the front door speakers are powered by the headunit and all remaining speakers are powered by the amp in the trunk which is a 200 watt amp

Do you happen to have a picture of a factory monsoon sub in a 4th gen?
Look just like this

and are located from my understanding from this description in the sail panel, I have removed these from the well. ie the location where the roll bar is mounted, right near a set of tweeters.

Ok.. im confused.. when i took out my system i took out the front door speakers which had a midrange speaker and a tweeter each... then each sail panel held a midbass speaker and finally in the hatch there are 2 4" tweeters... i guess they are tweeters... but there was no subwoofer
