I know a fair share of computers working with em for like 10 years now but this has me puzzled. when I open the internet(only after internet is opened) the screen will turn black every couple of seconds and then after a couple minutes its like it went into hybernation mode. And i cant take it out, like i said it only does it after the internet has been opened. I ran all my anti virus stuff, even did a config and ran all the system tools. and havnt found anything. some it makes me think one of the .sys files went, corrupt. any idea of how to fix it without reinstalling windows? cause i even tried that with the cd it came with and it says the version on the disc is older even though it says XP, so it wont let me do it... I also tried restore old settings, and that did nothing as well. I'm totally confused, hopefully someone can help me out. thanx in advance.

Try re-installing your browser (Internet Explorer I assume)
If that doesn't work, try switching to Mozilla Firefox. It's a better browser than IE anyway and a quick download. Just search for it.

to access the config.sys, win.ini, and system.ini files, goto Start>Run> and type "sysedit".

Do this, or try to get a fresh copy of windows xp with service pack 2 and use the repair windows setup... you can also try to restore windows to a previous point by going to start, programs, accessories, system tools, and click on system restore and pick a date previous to when this problem started... then again, when something like this happens, i always take an hour and just reinstall windows completely... save all your files you want to keep to a cd/dvd/external hard drive or whatever, then reboot with the xp cd and format the hard drive and reinstall... i do this every 6 months... it feels good to know you have a fresh install with no bugs and 9 times outta 10 the computer will perform better due to all the unnessesary crap that gets downloaded on your computer that you dont know about.... and if you dont want to have to always save your files before reinstalling, do what i do and make 2 partitions on your hard drive... one partition for your operating system and programe files, and the other partition for all your media, documents, and any other information you wouldnt want to loose on a system crash... that way if the computer crashes, all you have to do is boot up the computer with the xp cd and reinstall windows on the partition that contains the operating system... then once its done installing, you will still have all your information.... hope this helps
PS... you can also try to go to start, control panel, internet options, and click on the programs tab at the top, then look at the bottom for the "reset web settings" button and do that

Um. No. No to everything. Corrupt *.sys files won't stop you from JUST using IE. Exactly what have you tried? "I ran all my anti virus stuff, even did a config and ran all the system tools" doesn't tell me much. What system tools? Windows'? What anti-virus are you using? What extraneous threads are Explorer & IE starting? When exactly did the problem start? Does this happen only when you have a connection? Or everytime you open IE? Are you using a laptop? How old is your machine?

Honestly, alot of that doesnt matter, if hes running xp, and ie isnt working, its a software issue or a corrupt file... yes, i said a corrupt file... if im reading him correctly, then everytime he opens ie, the system fails... to me, that sounds like a software issue, which is why i suggested all the above

What, exactly, is the correleation between the XP OS, IE not working, and there being a software issue or corrupt file?

OK,
I think there is something more going on here beyond what you all are hitting at. For one, IE is not a seperate program but incorporated into the OS. If there was a problem with IE itself, Windows would be unstable as IE is what it uses for all computer browsing.
So to get the straight, you can leave the computer on for days and it is fine unless you go to the Internet?
I would check your IE plugins and what pages you are going to. Does it do it if you go to any web page? Try going to a page without java, flash, etc. Set your homepage to blank and see if it does it. Did you clear your internet cache? Also, it could be a bad sector on your hard disk where you internet cache is located, try moving the internet cache to a different location.
Is the computer on a network? Being that it is when the Internet is used, it could be a conflict between your network card and your graphics card. If you have a network, try browsing the other computer(s) and see if it eventually locks up. Make sure your network cables are good and not tangled in power wires.
Also, run msconfig from the run command. Use this to turn disable the startup items. I would start by disabling all of that you can and see if the problem still happens. If it doesn't happen, re enable the startup items till you find out which one it is.
Are you sure it only happens after the Internet and not just after a certain amount of time?
Please specify all the information you can. Let us know what is running in your processes in the task manager. Timmay!!!

As mentioned above switch from internet exploder to firefox or similar browser. What happened is your computer is very infected with spyware that has built in defense systems to maintain controll over other spyware programs. Get a few of these together and all IE will do is fight with itself over who has controll. It makes a never ending loop of programs grabbing controll back and forth. What you have to do is use spybot search and destroy, adaware SE, Hijak this, and toolbar cop to remove the entries that don't belong. Then you need to replace the IP stacks. WARNING--- Hijak this and Toolbar Cop have valid parts of the programs on your computer. If there is no file associated with each line, or it has (No Name) displayed, it is safe to delete it. ALL OTHERS LEAVE ALONE!!!
